Bidens vs. Axelrod: War of words dates back to Hunter calling him ‘giant a–hole’ ahead of 2016 election
President Biden and Democrat strategist David Axelrod have shown increasing tension towards each other after Axelrod questioned whether it was the best decision for Biden to run again in 2024. But the friction, at least on the Biden family side, appears to date back years.
Earlier this month, Axelrod suggested it may be “wise” for Biden to drop out of the 2024 race following a poll that showed him losing to former President Trump by up to 10 points in five battleground states he won in 2020.
“Only [Joe Biden] can make this decision,” the former Obama adviser wrote on X on November 5. “If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”
FORMER JILL BIDEN SPOX EXPLODES AT BIDEN’S TEAM AMID CRUMBLING POLL NUMBERS: ‘THIS IS INEXCUSABLE’
“It’s very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm,” he later added in the thread. “He’s defied CW before but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party–not ‘bed-wetting,’ but legitimate concern.”
Axelrod continued on Sunday by warning that Biden’s “age issue” was consistent in polling and noted it’s the “one thing” they can’t reverse, “no matter how effective” the president is behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, a Politico report has since surfaced alleging Biden had fired back at Axelrod in private by calling him a “pr—.” During a Monday CNN appearance, Axelrod fielded a question on the alleged comment, saying Biden was not the first to call him that during his time in politics.
However, the Biden family’s apparent disdain towards Axelrod appears to stem back at least to the 2016 election.
During that time, Hunter Biden ripped Axelrod as a “giant a– hole” when communicating with his longtime business partner Eric Schwerin and then-Vice President Biden’s deputy counsel Alexander Mackler, Fox News Digital previously reported.
In the September 2015 email exchange obtained by Fox News Digital, Mackler shared an Axelrod tweet with Hunter Biden and Schwerin. The message said the 2016 election was “still [Hillary Clinton’s] to lose, despite new polls.”
“It’s still HRC’s to lose, despite new polls. But it’s hard to inspire w/grinding, tactical race. ‘Hillary: Live With It’ is no rallying cry!” Axelrod tweeted.
“At the risk of being told for the second time this week that I need therapy…” Mackler said in response to the tweet. “This guy can take a flying leap. Cannot wait till he comes back to [Joe Biden] in a couple months and tells him it’s time to run, after being the patronizing, self-appointed kingmaker earlier this year and telling him not to run (and then talking about the meeting all over TV).”
“He is a giant a– hole,” Hunter replied.
The email exchange occurred slightly over a month before Biden announced that the window for a potential presidential campaign announcement had “closed.”
“Unfortunately, I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination,” Biden said during October 2015 remarks at the White House Rose Garden. “But while I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent.”
In a 2017 email exchange less than two years later, Schwerin and Mackler took more shots at Axelrod over his backing of Clinton over Biden in response to a Washington Free Beacon article with the headline, “Axelrod Rips Clinton for Election Excuses: ‘It Takes a Lot of Work to Lose to Donald Trump'”
BIDEN CALLS DAVID AXELROD A ‘P—-‘ IN PRIVATE AS EX-OBAMA ADVISER VOICES ELECTION CONCERNS: REPORT
“Do you think he should have thought about this before he backed her to the exclusion of others?!?” Schwerin said, appearing to reference Biden as one of the “others.”
“I’m old enough to remember when he took a whole afternoon of [Joe Biden’s] time in the West Wing, arguing that he needed to get out of [Hillary Clinton’s] way because she was the better candidate and would win,” Mackler said.
Axelrod, a senior CNN political commentator, expressed “100 percent” support for Hillary Clinton as early as January 2015 during a phone call with top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, according to an email Abedin sent to other Clinton operatives.

However, reports from 2016 regarding the Wikileaks emails show that Clinton staffers were concerned about Axelrod’s criticism of Clinton, and one aide even called his negative comments a “headache.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment on Biden’s recent alleged comment and what appears to be contempt from the Biden family against Axelrod dating back several years.

White House says it’s ‘obviously’ concerned about crime after Secret Service opens fire amid car break-in
The White House on Monday argued that it is concerned about crime in Washington, D.C., and in other U.S. cities the day after a Secret Service agent fired a weapon in Georgetown when three individuals were seen breaking into a government vehicle.
The White House has touted President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which Biden signed into law in 2021, for its billions of dollars for funding for local, state and federal police, while, it argues, Republicans haven’t acted on reducing crime. The uptick in crime in Democratic-controlled cities, such as D.C., has been a major issue local governments are dealing with and a talking point for Republicans in the 2022 midterms and going into 2024.
“They use this as a political weapon, as a political talking point while the president has taken action to make sure our communities are safer. Are we concerned? Obviously,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “Obviously we want to make sure Americans and their families feel safe not just here in D.C. but across communities. But we can’t do this alone.”
She added, “We’ve been very serious on dealing with the crime that we have seen just across the country and we’d love to work with Republicans on this, they have not been serious on this.”
The incident on Sunday night reportedly occurred when the Secret Service agents protecting Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden, approached three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied government vehicle. One of the federal agents discharged their weapon during the encounter but that it is believed that no one was struck, the Secret Service said.
“We are definitely concerned about what we’re seeing and not just here, across the country obviously,” Jean-Pierre said when asked how concerned Biden is about incidents like this one.
Crime, especially carjackings, has increase this year in D.C., where there have been more than 800 carjackings and 6,112 motor vehicle thefts in D.C. so far, according to D.C. crime data.
In October, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) was a victim of an armed carjacking in D.C.’s Navy Yard neighborhood. At the time, the White House said it is “unacceptable” what happened to him and also reiterated the funding the president has provided for police.

Biden: Hospitals ‘must be protected’ in Gaza as Israeli forces close in
President Biden on Monday called for Israel to take “less intrusive” action in Gaza in its war against Hamas, warning in particular against strikes that hit hospitals.
“Well, as we know, I have not been reluctant expressing my concerns with what’s going on,” Biden told reporters in the Oval Office.
“My hope and expectation is that there will be less intrusive action relative to hospitals and we remain in contact with the Israelis,” he continued. “Also there is an effort to get this pause to deal with the release of prisoners and that’s being negotiated… So I remain somewhat hopeful, but hospitals must be protected.”
Biden’s comments come as Israeli forces have closed in on the Al-Shifa hospital complex in Gaza which is the enclave’s largest medical center. Israel says that Hamas uses Al-Shifa hospital as a key operational headquarters for coordinating attacks against Israel and its civilians, although the intelligence Jerusalem has released cannot be independently verified.
Hamas has used Al-Shifa for press conferences with journalists in previous rounds of conflict. In 2008, the New York Times reported that Hamas gunmen in civilian clothing were seen around the hospital, claiming to be security guards but seen killing people they alleged to have, what Hamas considers, to be collaboration with Israel.
Still, Gazan health officials have warned that conditions inside the hospital are dire due to lack of medicine, fuel and food as hundreds of patients shelter inside. Reuters interviewed Gaza health ministry spokesperson Ashraf Al-Qidra, who was inside Al Shifa hospital, and who said that 32 patients had died in the last three days, including three newborn babies, as a result of Israel’s siege of the hospital and lack of power.
The president’s comments further crystalize how the White House has urged Israel to abide by the laws of war and minimize the impact on civilians as it carries out operations to target Hamas in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that left more than 1,000 Israelis dead.
Thousands of Palestinians have died in subsequent attacks by Israel, which launched a relentless aerial bombardment of Gaza for weeks before ground forces went in.
Biden and his top officials have expressed steadfast support for Israel and its right to defend itself, and the U.S. has provided munitions and other resources to the Jewish state.
But the administration has also shifted its tone in recent weeks to place more emphasis on humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians while progressive lawmakers and activists have called for a cease-fire in Gaza.
The Biden administration has rejected calls for a cease-fire, saying it would allow Hamas to regroup and plot its next steps. Instead, the administration pushed Israel to agree to humanitarian pauses to allow aid into Gaza and hostages out. Israel last week agreed to brief pauses in fighting in parts of Gaza to allow for the evacuation of civilians.

WATCH: Biden again refers to VP as ‘President Harris’ during White House’s Stanley Cup celebration
President Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “President Harris” during the White House’s Stanley Cup celebration on Monday.
“President Harris is here to make sure we do this the right way,” Biden, 80, said in an apparent joke just moments after taking the stage to honor the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup in June.
The gaffe marks the latest instance in which Biden has mistakenly referred to Harris as the “president,” which has happened on at least six prior occasions.
On one such occasion in Oct. 2022, Biden called Harris “a great president” while wishing her a happy birthday during a White House event. “Happy Birthday to a great president, we know your mom is always with you,” Biden said.
He called her “President Harris” during remarks in South Carolina in December 2021, and did so at another event earlier that year in January. In March 2022, he also mistakenly called Harris the “first lady” while talking to reporters.
Biden, who turns 81 on Nov. 20, is the oldest person to ever serve as president. If elected to a second term, he would be 82 on inauguration day, and 86 upon leaving office.

Harris, 59, has frequently defended Biden from concerns over his age, including from within their own party. Last month, she told “60 Minutes” that “Joe Biden is very much alive and running for re-election.”
