Hunter Biden attorney withdraws from federal gun charge case
Richard Jones, an attorney representing Hunter Biden in his federal gun charge case, has filed paperwork Friday to withdraw himself from the matter.
The president’s son had pleaded not guilty to federal gun charges in U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware Tuesday morning after being charged out of Special Counsel David Weiss’ years-long investigation.
“Mr. Biden has been advised of, and consents to, our withdrawal. He also agrees this withdrawal will cause no material adverse effect or prejudice to him and remains completely satisfied with Messrs. [Abbe] Lowell’s and [Bartholomew] Dalton’s continued representation of him,” reads the document filed by Jones in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.
“Accordingly, our withdrawal as counsel will have no material adverse effect on Mr. Biden’s interests,” it adds.
Jones did not immediately respond Friday to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
The president’s son appeared in person in court for his arraignment Tuesday morning after being charged with making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm; making a false statement related to information required to be kept by a federal firearms licensed dealer; and one count of possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.
With all counts combined, the total maximum prison time for the charges could be up to 25 years. Each count carries a maximum fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release.
Biden pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
Magistrate Judge Christopher Burke presided over the hearing and laid out the conditions for Hunter Biden’s release, which require the president’s son to seek employment and communicate all international travel plans. Biden also is prohibited from possessing a firearm and using alcohol and drugs, and he is required to get drug tested randomly and participate in a substance abuse counseling program.
The federal gun charges are the first charges Weiss has brought against Hunter since being granted special counsel status by Attorney General Merrick Garland in August.

House Republicans to hold conference meeting on Columbus Day amid speaker fight
The House Republican conference will be meeting Monday at 6 p.m. amid the fight for the speaker’s gavel, Fox News Digital has learned.
Two House GOP aides familiar with the meeting confirmed that the Republican members will be convening on Columbus Day, a federal holiday.
Republican members will likely discuss their conference’s replacement for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., after his ousting Tuesday.
TRUMP ENDORSES JIM JORDAN FOR SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: ‘COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT’
The meeting comes amid the fight for the speakership that is seeing House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, jockey for the gavel.
Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R-Okla., is also circling around the speaker race but has not formally entered the fray.
The House GOP conference is largely splitting between Scalise and Jordan, with the latter scoring a speaker endorsement from former President Trump.
However, Trump’s endorsement does not necessarily mean a Jordan speakership is on the docket — both Scalise and the House Judiciary chairman need 218 votes to ascend to the speakership.
Meanwhile, Scalise — a fundraising powerhouse — is seeing support from a long list of Republicans in his bid for the gavel.
The speaker fight will likely be a loud one, especially following McCarthy’s ouster via a motion to vacate led by Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz.
‘SHELL SHOCKED’ KEVIN MCCARTHY WILL NOT RUN FOR HOUSE SPEAKER AGAIN FOLLOWING REMOVAL
Trump gave Jordan his “complete [and] total endorsement” for speaker of the House, saying he is “respected by all.”
“Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, D.C., representing Ohio’s 4th Congressional District.,” Trump posted on his Truth Social overnight. “Respected by all, he is now Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.”
“As President, I had the honor of presenting Jim with our Country’s highest civilian award, The Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump continued. “So much is learned from sports, and Jim was a master!”
Trump, praising Jordan’s wrestling record, said that “while attending Graham High School, he won State Championships all four years, a rarity, and compiled an amazing 156-1 record. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Jim became a two-time NCAA Division l Wrestling Champion.”
“He won his 1985-86 NCAA Championship Matches in his weight class,” Trump posted. “Jim has a masters degree in Education from Ohio State University & a Law Degree from Capital University.”
He added: “He is STRONG on Crime, Borders, our Military/Vets, & 2nd Amendment. Jim, his wife, Polly, & family are outstanding – He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”

Timeline of Sen Bob Menendez’s indictment with wife alleges yearslong corruption
New Jersey Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, are facing a hefty federal indictment that details a years-long bribery scheme involving a $60,000 Mercedes-Benz, gold bars and loads of cash.
So far, Menendez has refused to resign his seat, but he stepped down from his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last month.
The Democratic senator was also indicted on federal bribery charges in 2016, which related to a wealthy Florida eye doctor and longtime friend who was a big donor to Menendez and allegedly received benefits in return. He was acquitted of the charges in 2018 following a mistrial. The most recent charges are unrelated.
Here is how the events unfolded, according to the indictment.
DEMOCRAT SEN MENENDEZ’S WIFE HIT, KILLED PEDESTRIAN WHILE DRIVING IN 2018: REPORTS
February 2018
Arslanian begins dating Menendez. Shortly after, Arslanian introduces Menendez to her longtime friend and businessman Wael Hana, who has close connections with Egyptian officials and is associated with Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer and donor to Menendez, and Jose Uribe, who works in the New Jersey insurance and trucking industries.
Between 2018 and 2022
Menendez and Arslanian accept bribes from Hana, Daibes and Uribe, which include gold bars, hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, a new Mercedes-Benz convertible, home mortgage payments and “low-or-no-show job” compensation — three $10,000 checks — for Arslanian, and valuable home furnishings.
Menendez also provides sensitive, confidential information about the federal government to Egyptian officials, including information about personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. The indictment alleges he also ghost-writes a letter at this time advocating for the release of $300 million in aid to Egypt and tells Egyptian officials he will approve or abolish holds on military financing and sales of military equipment to Egypt.
MSNBC’S ALICIA MENENDEZ ADDRESSES FATHER’S INDICTMENT: COLLEAGUES HAVE ‘AGGRESSIVELY’ COVERED
October 2018
Daibes is charged with federal criminal charges for obtaining loans under deceptive pretenses from a bank he established in New Jersey.
December 2018
Arslanian hits and kills a pedestrian, Richard Koop. She was not given a DUI test and was let go immediately after providing a brief statement to police, according to dash cam video released by Bogota Police to The New York Times. Michael Mordaga, identified by the New York Post as a former director of Hackensack Police and former chief of detectives in the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, was on the scene within minutes with other officers and can be heard in dash cam footage saying: “I don’t even know her. That’s my buddy’s wife who’s friends with her. He said, ‘could you do me a favor and take her up there, because her friend just got in a car accident.’”
January 2019
Uribe offers to help buy a new Mercedes-Benz convertible worth over $60,000 for Menendez and Arslanian after the fatal crash. In exchange, the indictment alleges Menendez sought to interfere in the New Jersey Attorney General’s investigation of Uribe for obtaining loans under false pretenses.
April to May 2019
Hana’s business pays approximately $23,000 to bring the mortgage of Arslanian’s residence current. Menendez pressures a U.S. Department of Agriculture official to protect Hana’s business monopoly that was certified by Egypt.
October 2019
Menendez and Arslanian get engaged and are married one year later.
DEMOCRAT SEN BOB MENENDEZ FACING INDICTMENT ON BRIBERY CHARGES
December 2020 to 2022
Menendez agrees to sway the pending federal prosecution of Daibes in exchange for cash, furniture, and gold bars given by Daibes.
June 2022
FBI issues a search warrant at the Menendez residence in New Jersey, discovering over $480,000 in cash hidden in clothing, closets and a safe. They also find over $70,000 in cash in Arslanian’s safe. Envelopes with fingerprints and/or DNA of Daibes or his driver are found, as well as at least 13 gold bars worth over $100,000, the Mercedes-Benz and home furniture.
September 2023
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York charges Arslanian, Menendez, Hana, Uribe, Daibes in the federal bribery scheme.
Menendez and Arslanian plead not guilty, and Menendez refuses to resign from the Senate amid growing calls from the Democratic Caucus.

Biden says November meeting with China’s Xi is ‘a possibility’
President Biden on Friday said a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States next month is possible.
When questioned on reporting that the two leaders will meet face-to-face in California next month, Biden wouldn’t confirm a meeting is scheduled.
“There is no such meeting set up, but it is a possibility,” the president told reporters.
The White House National Security Council would also not confirm to The Hill that any plans are officially in place, but noted that Biden has said he looks forward to continuing conversations with Xi this fall.
The last time Biden and Xi met in person was last November in Bali on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit. The president has since said he hopes to again meet with Xi.
Biden expressed his disappointment that the Chinese leader didn’t attend the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi last month. However, Biden added at the time: “I am going to get to see him.”
Since their meeting last year, diplomatic ties between the two nations took a hit when a Chinese spy balloon spent several days floating over the U.S. before it was shot down off the coast of South Carolina in February.
In June, Biden called Xi a dictator and said he got upset when the spy balloon was shot down because he didn’t know about it.
Xi’s decision not to attend the Group of 20 summit last month further put a strain on relationships between China and the U.S. and other Indo-Pacific nations. China sent the country’s premier, Li Qiang, to India on his behalf and did not give details into why he decided not to participate.

Biden: Some Speaker candidates would be easier to work with than others
President Biden on Friday pledged to work whoever becomes the next House Speaker, but acknowledged some candidates for the job would be easier to work with than others.
Biden, after delivering remarks on the September jobs report, was asked about former President Trump backing Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for Speaker as Republicans debate over who will replace the recently ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
“Look, whoever the House speaker is I’m going to try to work with. They control half the Congress, and I’m going to try to work with them,” Biden said. “Some people I imagine it’s going to be easier to work with than others, but whoever the Speaker is I’m going to try to work with.”
Jordan, a longtime Trump ally and former leader of the House Freedom Caucus, is pursuing the Speaker’s gavel, as is House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.). Other Republicans, such as Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), have yet to formally decide on whether they will run for the top job in the House.
Biden has repeatedly said he will work with whoever the eventual Speaker is, and the White House has avoided weighing in on whether they have a preferred candidate.
But McCarthy’s removal earlier this week after eight Republicans joined Democrats in voting to oust the California Republican, following a motion brought by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), could complicate the White House’s priorities.
Government funding will run out in November without additional congressional action, and the lack of a Speaker in the meantime will shorten the window for passing funding bills.
Additionally, the White House in August sent Congress a supplemental funding request that included $24 million in military and financial assistance for Ukraine as it fights off invading Russian forces. But Jordan in particular has been skeptical about continued U.S. aid to Ukraine, and if he wins the gavel it could become more difficult for the White House to secure its requested funds for Kyiv.
